Gut Technique

Gut – sausage casing / intestine – is a wonderfully versatile material. Used by the Eskimo peoples to make water repellant coats and pants, gut can be used like cordage and like sheets of material.

Most of the gut work that I create is made with pork; sometimes lamb is used for the smaller diameter. The work is both 3-D and 2-D and mostly sculptural.

When stretched as flat pieces, the gut is typically layered to create a sturdy surface. When left whole, the gut dries on itself to create a solid, strong thin string-like material. Due to the nature of the material, the gut is worked fresh and wet. Once dried it can be softened, but it will never return to its initial, supple state.

Basketry Techniques

An age-old craft, I have been known for pushing off into the deep end of established basketry. I like to see what the materials will do – and usually let them ‘do their own thing’. Most anything that is flexible enough to suit my purposes becomes material for basketry techniques. Not all of it is ‘natural’, but it is all a part of my environment.

Materials that find their way into her art work:

Lots of …

… irons in the fire, balls in the air, things to do!

Along with getting ready for the new Studio Collection’s Spring Sale 2015 (April 25 at Harmony Hall in Spring Grove Village), I have been prepping for the Western Wildlife Corridor’s Wildflower Show this coming Friday (tomorrow!) evening at Mt. St. Joseph University. Naturally dyed clothing and silk scarves are ready to transport.

And the deadline for submitting work to the Cincinnati Book Arts Association’s annual members’ exhibit at the downtown public library is coming fast, so I’ve been working on a new book. Used the accordion fold of a hot tub filter as the pages…

It’s been fun to do!  Now, back to Spring Sale work…

Current creativity

Oh, it has been a long time since posting… Mostly busy with life and grandkids (who are so wonderfully adept at sharing their colds!). Lately, though, I have been gearing up for a new spring sale that the Studio Collection group decided to do. Saturday, April 25, 10-4pm at Harmony Hall (same place as usual, just a new day/time to see all the artists).

Since winter in my neck of the woods is not very conducive to outdoor dyeing with plant materials, I decided to show some of the other artwork I like to do besides natural dyeing and sewn clothing. Sooooo…..

…. Just finished a bunch of blank bound books to go along with the smaller ones using handmade papers and dyed papers. The studio still shows my activity…

Of course, I will have baskets on hand, too. And since I have gotten into sewing again, I played with making coiled vessels on the sewing machine. Pretty happy with them!

Come by and see all my new work as well as the new invited artists to the show. Should be quite an exciting event!

One week home…

… and my body is sorta back in this time zone. Although, after a sleepless night last night, I’m less sure.

Unpacking, laundry and putting away has happened. The pile of mail is down to just a few items that need attention. Samples for two upcoming bookmaking classes have been created. Family contacted. Hot tub turned higher and enjoyed.

And…… the tire cozy that was finished before I left in April is now installed on the back of my car! Didn’t want to put it on earlier as I really wanted my love to use the car while I was gone. He has this thing about cozies…
